From Beginner to Champion: Zhang Ming's Chess Journey

Chronicles Zhang Ming's journey from complete beginner to inter-school chess champion.

A Young Chess Player's Story

In September 2022, when eight-year-old Zhang Ming first arrived at the Bowen Chess Club, he did not even know how the chess pieces moved. Just over two years later, he has become one of the leading U12 players in the Manchester area, winning the title at the 2024 Autumn Inter-School Championship.

Discovering Chess

“At first he just thought it was fun,” recalls Zhang Ming's mother. “He came across the game in the chess club at school, and when he got home he kept pestering us to let him learn.”

In the very first lesson of the starter class, Coach Li noticed that Zhang Ming had an unusually strong interest in chess. “He was always the first to put his hand up to answer questions, and after class he would keep asking me to explain a bit more,” says Coach Li. “That kind of enthusiasm for learning is very rare.”

Rapid Progress

In just six months, Zhang Ming moved up from the starter class to the beginner class. Every day after school he practised tactics puzzles on Lichess, and he never missed a weekend training session.

“Zhang Ming is very bright, but more importantly he is hard-working and focused,” says Coach Li. “Many children only keep up chess for a short burst of enthusiasm, but Zhang Ming stuck with it, and the more he learnt, the more interested he became.”

His First Tournament

In March 2023, Zhang Ming played in his first formal competition – the club's internal rapid tournament. Although he finished only fifth, the experience made him realise how important practical play is.

“A tournament is completely different from practice,” says Zhang Ming. “Every move my opponent made made me nervous, and the time pressure was intense. But I really enjoyed the feeling of that challenge.”

Breaking Through a Plateau

In the second half of 2023, Zhang Ming hit a plateau. His results in several consecutive internal tournaments were disappointing, and for a while he felt rather discouraged.

Coach Li identified the problem: “His tactical ability was strong, but he lacked overall strategic thinking. He often couldn't find a way to continue the attack when he had the advantage.”

To address this, Coach Li drew up a dedicated training plan for Zhang Ming, focusing on positional evaluation and planning. Through structured study and a great deal of practical play, Zhang Ming gradually mastered the essentials of the middlegame.

The Road to the Title

At the start of 2024, Zhang Ming moved up to the intermediate class and began playing in ECF rated tournaments. His rating rose steadily, from an initial 800 to 1200.

November's inter-school championship was Zhang Ming's moment to shine. In the seven-round Swiss tournament he played superbly, scoring five wins and one draw in the first six rounds to clinch the title with a round to spare.

“I remember the final game very clearly,” says Zhang Ming excitedly. “My opponent was last year's champion and very strong. But I remembered what Coach Li had taught me, stayed calm and played out my plan step by step. When my opponent resigned, I could hardly believe I had won!”

Looking Ahead

Winning the title has not made Zhang Ming complacent. “This is only the beginning,” he says. “I hope to keep improving and play in higher-level competitions, and perhaps one day I can represent the UK in international events.”

Coach Li is confident about Zhang Ming's future: “He has talent and, even more, perseverance. As long as he keeps his current attitude to learning, he will certainly achieve even more in the future.”

A Message from the Coach

“Zhang Ming's story shows that while talent matters, passion, hard work and persistence matter even more. Chess does not just teach children how to play the game; more importantly, it develops their ability to face challenges and solve problems. Every child develops at their own pace, and as long as they keep going, they can all achieve their own success.” – Coach Li

Congratulations to Zhang Ming on his excellent results! We look forward to seeing more young players achieve their dreams at the Bowen Chess Club!
