Highlights from the Annual Gala
On the afternoon of 15 December 2024, Bowen Chess Club held its annual gala at Sale Sports Centre. The event celebrated the club’s achievements during 2024, recognised outstanding students and coaches, and shared plans for 2025.
Achievements in 2024
2024 was a rewarding year for Bowen Chess Club:
- Membership growth: Registered membership rose from 60 to 80, an increase of 33%.
- Tournament results: Students won 15 awards at competitions, including three championship titles.
- ECF ratings: Twenty students received official English Chess Federation ratings.
- Teaching innovation: The club successfully introduced online courses to support more students.
Student Awards
The club recognised the following students for their achievements during 2024:
- Most Improved Player: Li Xiaoming, who progressed from beginner level to become an accomplished intermediate student.
- Best Newcomer: Wang Xiaofang, who placed third in the U12 category during her first year of competition.
- Player of the Year: Zhang Rui, who represented the club in several competitions and achieved excellent results.
- Team Spirit Award: Zhao Ming, Li Qiang and Chen Xiaoli, recognised for supporting fellow students and taking an active role in club events.
Coaching Team Recognition
Head coach Mr Li received the Coach of the Year award for his outstanding teaching and tournament guidance. Assistant coach Mr Wang was named Most Popular Coach.
Event Highlights
The gala included a varied programme of chess activities:
- Simultaneous exhibition: Coach Li played ten students at the same time.
- Blindfold exhibition: Coach Wang played three opponents simultaneously without seeing the boards.
- Classic game analysis: Coaches reviewed notable games from the 2024 World Chess Championship.
- Questions and answers: Students spoke directly with the coaching team.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The club also presented its development plans for 2025:
- Hold more internal tournaments and training camps.
- Strengthen cooperation with the ECF and provide more rating opportunities.
- Expand the online course programme to support more students.
- Arrange visits to professional tournaments and broaden students’ experience.
- Introduce new teaching equipment and chess software.
